Wilma Shakespeare, a descendant of the bard himself, has been confined to a mental institution since her last disastrous play. She’s been given a chance to win her right to freedom by successfully writing and directing a comedy.  Sounds simple right?  Under the supervision of her somewhat pessimistic psychiatrist and with a somewhat clueless cast, Wilma’s situation seems doomed to failure until help arrives from a somewhat surprising source.   Join us to enjoy Wilma’s dilemma and learn a little about Shakespeare in the process.

“The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs”

 Full Length Drama

Written by:  William Inge

Spring Show: May 28, 29, 30, June 4, 5, and 6

Ticket Prices: $10 Seniors/Students; $12 Adults

Playwright William Inge takes us back to the early 1920s and into the home of the Flood family in a small Oklahoma town.  We find Rubin, the traveling salesman father, Cora, the sensitive and lovely wife and mother, Sonny, their little boy and Reenie, their shy teenage daughter.  In a town where everyone else seems to be successful, the Flood family is struggling to survive on many levels. The plot of Mr. Inge’s comedy drama is less one story than a series of short stories – the fight between a husband and wife, the fear of an overly shy young girl on going to a dance, the problems of an introverted little boy and more. In this interesting drama Mr. Inge is saying that there is dark at the top of everyone’s stairs, but that it can be dissipated by understanding, by tolerance, by compassion and by the brand of companionship that demands not conformity but love.

This backstage farce brought Carol Burnett back to Broadway and starred Philip Bosco as her husband and leading man.  The year is 1953 and an acting couple (Charlotte and George Hay) are on tour in Buffalo with a repertory consisting of “Cyrano de Bergerac” (the revised one nostril version) and Noel Coward’s “Private Lives”. They find out that Frank Capra is en route to Buffalo to catch their matinee performance as he considers offering George the a starring role in his upcoming film, “The Scarlet Pimpernel”.  Hilarious misunderstandings and madcap misadventures abound, all of which are magnified by Charlotte’s deaf mother who manages the theatre.  You’re sure to enjoy this show that has been referred to as “Nothing less than a love letter to live theatre”.
